On our way to Newcastle, NSW, AU for a weekend of exploring and then wine tasting in Hunter Valley, we stopped off the highway to check out the grounds of a hospital (out in the middle of nowhere) that we heard has hundereds of wild kangaroos living on the grounds (and not fenced in.) The rumor was TRUE!
It was quite the funny experience as we could not find the grounds at first. We saw some signs for the "largest salt water lake in Australia" and since we had the gps going on the ipad, we decided to go see what the lake looked like since we could not find these "kangaroos", Eric's boss had told him about. As we were turning around to head back to the highway, we saw a discrete sign for a mental health hospital and decided to go down the road, and see if it may be the kangaroo hospital .
As we continued down this long, ominous road, we got a kick out of imaging this turning into some sort ofinitation joke his work was playing on him, where we roll up to this psych ward and the code word to commit yourself is "I'm here to see the kangaroos." Ha, ha, well it turned out we didn't have to talk to anyone, and at the end of the long road, was indeed a ton of wild kangaroos, just hanging out. There was a little tiny wire fence that didn't seem to do much more than identify which area was for animals and which for humans. There were areas for the kangaroos to come and go where ever they wanted... so some were hanging out in the open areas of the hospital grounds and the rest were in the fenced in area. Check out the pics and video. They were so cool!

All great pics of the kangaroos. Especially love the ones with the little joeys -- particularly the one where he's got his head in his mom's pouch. So cute!
